Everyone needs to recharge their batteries at some point. One of my favorite things to do if I’m by the beach, whether on a trip or at home in California, is to have a solo day and go to the beach alone. Beach days with friends are so much fun—definitely a different kind of fun—but sometimes you and your friends are on different pages about how you want to spend your time.
Being able to do what you want to do, even if you can’t get anyone to join you, is empowering and can lead you to some amazing solo memories. This is what solo travel is all about!
How to Go to The Beach Alone
You already have what it takes to take on the world by yourself, but sometimes we need a little shove to get us going.
Sending the beach solo is great. If you’re wondering how to go to the beach alone, just grab your things and go! Just always make sure to keep an eye on your things. However, being alone could lead to leaving your stuff unattended at some point, especially if you want to swim or sleep.
Most beaches are no strangers to theft, and leaving your things unattended will always flirt with that consequence. To avoid this altogether, pull an old-fashioned and leave the phone at home. Leave everything at home and just bring a swimsuit and towel if you want a really reflective experience. However, if you’re like, “I MUST bring my valuables to the beach,” keep reading.
How To: Take a Solo Nap on the Beach Without Your Things Getting Stolen
- Bring a tote
- Wear a watch so you aren’t taking your phone out as often. I wear a shark watch because they are waterproof. Use my code EARTHANDEMMA10 for 10% off.
- Fill the tote with all of your things, besides the towel you’re probably lying on and the hat you’re using to protect your face
- Double knot the tote
- Use the tote as a pillow and rest easy!

How to: Do the Same Thing but in the Ocean
If you want to go for a swim in the ocean, it’s a different story. You can bring your tied-up tote into the water and hold it up with one hand to get a quick wade and dunk in, but that’s a little extreme for me, and I prefer to splash around.
What I do when I want to swim solo: bring my tote as close to the water as I can without it getting wet. Ideally, leaving it with people nearby. Bonus points if I leave my towel out, so there’s a whole venue needing analyzing by a potential thief rather than a solo tote waiting to be bag-napped. When I’m out shredding the beach break, it’s hard to keep a close eye on my bag, but I always look back every moment I can for peace of mind and whatnot. Don’t do this at night. There are so many thieves at night.
I never bring anything more valuable than my phone and wallet to the beach, or anywhere really. If you bring your camera, GoPro, etc, though, it’s definitely important to keep them in their case rather than out in the open. It doesn’t hurt to ask some nice-looking people to keep an eye on your things, but I honestly don’t trust anyone so I hardly do this. All beaches are different in terms of theft levels, but as long as you’re cautious you shouldn’t have an issue.
I’ll let Dwight close this one out.
